Jacksonville Beach, Florida

In the Beginning

This beautiful coastal resort town is part of the collective Jacksonville Beaches area of Northeast Florida. The other communities that make up this area include Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, Mayport, and Pontre Vedra. Originally a Spanish settlement, the US took ownership of the land in the early 1800s. By the late 1800s, railroads made travel from Jacksonville to the ocean much easier. Then, real estate developers began to see the value in building up the Jacksonville Beaches area as an official resort community.

After the turn-of-the-20th-century, The Pavilion was constructed. Dubbed “Little ConeyIsland”, it brought even more tourists to the area. However, contract issues and neglect brought down its demise by 1925. A few years prior to that, Shad’s Pier was created. Jacksonville Beach’s only amusement park left standing today is Amusement Landing.
